RFC Participates in Redlands Fly-In
Fly-In reaches new heights
14/May/2008

For the first time the Redlands Municipal Airport premiered an airshow as well
as its regular displays in its annual Redlands Airport Fly-In on Saturday, May
10.
The Fly-In was another installment of the Redlands Heritage Festival.
“We really wanted a hometown air show feel,” said Dennis Brown, coordinator of
the air show.
The show featured a number of planes ranging from classic to new, from big to
small and from the standard white to flashy multicolored planes. Adults and
children both were excited at the sight of the many planes on display and even
more excited about the ones in the air.
“It’s been a lot of fun so far,” said Randy Bargar, a spectator of the show. A
number of local pilots as well as flight enthusiasts watched the show.
At the beginning was a performance of the American Anthem and Lee Greewood’s
“I’m Proud to be an American.” The songs were accompanied by parachuters who
presented a giant flag to the audience in their landing.
“It was very exciting,” said Ingrid Biglow of the Redlands Flying Club.
The day began with an unsure start as the haze that covered the city the week
before was heavy that Saturday. When the haze lifted to a sunny day, the pilots
were ready for take off.
There were a number of acrobatic performances, which many of the spectators
agreed was the best part.
Two pilot acrobats did a number of flips, dives and turns that made the audience
hold their breath. A team of six pilots put on a show that included a number of
complicated formations. There was also a man who did tricks with a remote
control helicopter which the emcee described as “things done with a helicopter
that can not be done.”
There were also a number of organizations represented. The Redlands Flying Club,
Model Airplane Club and M.Y. AIR Flight School were there as well as the
Redlands Fire and Police Departments and the San Bernardino Sherrif’s
Department. The departments brought a few of their vehicles for display
including a fire truck, heliocopter and modified hummer.
Girl Scout troop... provided refreshment to spectators.
If anyone was interested in getting some air themselves, helicopter rides were
available, and a rock wall was there for the children who wanted to get a little
higher.
“It brings out the best spirit in all of us,” said Biglow about the Fly-In,
“It’s a spirit building activity and I am so excited to be a part of it.”
